Abstract

In the article, the life and work of the academician of the Academy of Sciences of the
Kazakh SSR, doctor of philological sciences, professor Kazhym Zhumaliev is considered in the context
of the development of Kazakh literary science. The original position of an outstanding scientist in the
periodization of the history of national literature, his conceptual views in developing a theory of literature,
as well as exemplary pedagogical activity and enormous work in the preparation of textbooks and teaching
aids, are subjected to comprehensive analysis through the prism of modern approaches. On the basis of
concrete facts, the pioneering role of a major researcher in his scientific field is proved, the difficult ups
and downs of his personal fate, which he experienced from the violence of Soviet ideology, are revealed.
The author of the article pays special attention to the merit of K. Zhumaliev in the study of the
poetic heritage of Makhambet Utemisuly and Abay Kunanbayuly.
